AIR SPRING 2021 GROUP EXHIBITION

INVISIBLE SOUNDS

“Since the initiation of the PLAN8T Artist-In-Residence Program, we have continued to explore and experiment with various topics and themes of each residency, hoping to create a broader collective artistic narrative. In this residency exhibition, we choose to discuss through sensory—— the sound. How does “sound” as a perceivable yet invisible matter become the subject of artwork or how is it presented as a medium, and what information can it convey?

After the official release of the 2021 Summer Artist-In-Residence Program “The invisible sound.”  with Broad Digital on June 19th, artists from more than ten different countries have applied for the program, and finally determined ten groups of artists individuals/teams participate in the program. In addition, we welcomed a special partner, Yunhe Centre, to join as a sub-residency program located in the Tibetan settlement of Jiarong, for artists to discover the relationship between natural ecological soundscape and human activities.

With the support of one resident advisor, two guest advisors, and two technical instructors, we have carried out no less than 10 times of seminars, commentary sessions, and lectures from advisors since the launch. Holding these online activities has facilitated communication and inspiration among the participants, together we create an experimental field of sound, taking invisible but pervasive sound in daily experience as object and material turns into experimental, interactive, and compelling sound artworks to challenge the audiences to perceive the world with different angles.

Transmitted through medium, sound lies between objects and forms, gives movement to all yet shuttles through the gaps of the world, it is unattainable and out of reach yet omnipresence; It flows, it caresses and penetrates air.  We can apprehend information and perceive the environment around us with our eyes closed through sound. The production of sound represents the people, events, and things that exist behind them, whether at its physical or conscious state, To vocalize and listen is the process of creation.

Each of the 10 artworks in the exhibition has shown different narrative on sounds, exploring a wide range of topics from living environment and cultural norms, humanistic demands and technological development, individuals vs. communities, obstacles of worldwide communication, and the impact of human facilities on coexisting species to the practice of sound visualization. The exhibition has three sections by floor: The Inside and Outside of Daily Life, The Index of Exploration, Reverberation and Resonance. As audiences moving upward through the exhibition, the sound becomes more intertwined and perceivable, the “invisible sound” hidden behind these contents is to be contemplated and deliberated by the audiences.
