José Drummond

“C+C" Media Art Residency

José Drummond is a Portuguese artist currently based in Shanghai. His research-driven practice is an enigmatic and poetic investigation of the space in-between with questions of displacement, transience, and fragmented identities. Making use of a heterogeneous formal language where installation, video, light, photography, performance, painting, and curatorial initiatives intersect, Drummond’s process-based hybrid works defy classifications and artistic genres. His works are made with a strong experimental aspect. He is the director of VAFA - international video art festival, in Macau, and holds an MFA in Creative Practice from the University of Plymouth (UK) and the Transart Institute in New York (USA). He is a 2016 Sovereign Asian Art Award finalist and received scholarships from the Orient Foundation (Portugal), the National Centre of Culture (Portugal), and the Cultural Institute of Macau. He participated in Transart Trienalle in Berlin and represented Portugal at Valencia Biennale in 1992.

The Dream of the Red Chamber |
Installation: Red Neon Light, Electrical Wire, Electrical Transformers, Red Soil, Glass, Black Spray Paint, Subwoofer, Soundbar, LED Screen Display, Wood, Black Carpet

To Jimmie Durham and Lawrence Weiner.

My work deals with readings of the space in-between cultures, in-between mediums, and in-between perceptions of time. I am interested in creating a space of transience and meditation -- a speculative post-human temple in which the world is understood as a whole rather than as composed of separate realms.

To live in the present is such a strange and complex feeling. Why do we feel the way we do? Are we in a temporal limbo -- constantly conjecturing about the past and the future? How can we make sense of the contrast between the overpowering technology and the perfect imperfections in nature? Sometimes it feels like we are in a labyrinth where we not only get lost but forget to search for meanings. In this state of disorder and ambiguity, in this maze, there is no entry or exit.

The red neon light on the wall is a closed labyrinth, it is also a hybrid element bearing resemblances to a computer microchip, Chinese pattern imagery, and to the floor plant of Han Dynasty tombs. The ambiguity is extended by the title in conjunction with the other elements on the installation that works as a reflection -- an echo, intended to create a level of immanence with the neon light while reworking the understanding of what is the object, the subject, casualty, agency, emotion, and subjectivity.

To conclude, keeping the viewer in a state of natural time suspension of disbelief, there is a soundscape created with Mother Earth’s natural heartbeat rhythm, also known as the “Schumann Resonance”. It is a 7.83 Hz frequency that is also an alpha/theta brainwave frequency in the human brain. This brainwave exists when humans are in a relaxed, dreamy, sleepy state -- when cell regeneration and healing happen.
