Since the industrial revolution the world has become massively more connected. Whilst it once would have taken five or six months for a UK artist and their work to reach China, this can now be achieved in hours, and communication between the two nations can happen instantaneously. Whilst once peoples from opposite sides of the globe may not have even been aware of the existence of the other, today awareness and understanding of other cultures is the norm. The global communications and travel systems that facilitate this also afford cooperation between governments around the world, allowing action to be taken on issues affecting the world on a global scale. However, despite the level of interconnection between nations around the world, the planet is still engulfed in conflict and locked in paralysis over global issues like climate change.

This is a subtitled audio work, accompanied by research photos, which recounts the histories of two very different endeavours to connect the world: submarine communication cables, and the constructed language Esperanto. The stories behind these efforts reveal the hopes, successes, and failures of the people who created and use them.
