PLAN8T AIR S21 “The invisible sound”

Based in Hamburg, Germany, Dong Zhou & Yujue Liang 's recent work and research focus on sound, video and installation in the fields of ecology, environment and technology. To explore our changing ways of perceiving and feeling sounds and images in the anthropocene due to the development of science and technology, the change of environment and climate. Their works have been exhibited at the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, the Museum of Perception Graz, the Kunstquartier Bethanien Berlin, and the Essence Contemporary Art Museum Chongqing.

Acoustic vehicle alert system (Avas) is an acoustic device commonly installed on new energy vehicles. It simulates the noise generated by gasoline and diesel engines during operation, to give an appropriate sound alert to walking people.

The regulation that all new energy vehicles must be equipped with an acoustic vehicle warning system has been adopted by various countries. It also requires the acoustic vehicle alarm system to emit 56-75 decibel of continuous noise when driving. In order to innovate and enhance brand competitiveness and user driving experience, automakers around the world have also begun to cooperate with artists and sound engineers to produce digital and analog sound waves on the acoustic vehicle alarm system, defining and creating a completely whole new world of sound that is not part of our previous auditory experience. People cannot intuitively recognize a coming car merely by a brand-new acoustic signal that they have never been exposed to before. Instead, cognitive unification of both visual and acoustic signals is achieved through unconscious training and experience from every viewing. However, this cognitive method seems to be unsuitable for blind people.

The three-channeled videos are composed of NFT video portraits of 15 blind children, showing that they heard the digital and analog sound waves of the acoustic alarm system for the first time, and we re-edited these digital and analog sound waves as the video soundtrack based on the feedback of each blind child. The three sets of videos and stereo sound are unfolded in the form of the surround, re-simulating the scene where the blind child listens to the digital-analog sound wave for the first time.

At the same time, the video portrait NFTs of these 15 blind children will be displayed on the Opensea website, and the benefits obtained from each NFT sold will be used to help these blind children.
