Cunming Sun

“C+C" Media Art Residency

Cunming Sun attended the Jiangnan University and the ENSBA Lyon, respectively, obtaining a bachelor's degree in literature, a degree in arts, followed by a master's degree in art. Sun’s work is fraught with signs gleaned from his daily life. His visual language is laconic by nature, by working with ready-made products, often changing the object's original semantics, in order to extend its appearance romantically or ambiguously by means of subtle variation. Sun used his gestures as the response to reality, addressing themes of cultural identity, individuality, and the overarching constructs which govern such concepts. Visual elements are presented in a strained way, illuminating the self-reflective quality of itself. His media-diverse practice encompasses ready-made and found objects in addition to film and video. Cunming Sun has solo exhibitions and projects in PLATESPACE, Hua International, Qi Mu Space, Galerie Houg (Paris); he has group exhibitions in CHAO Art Center, Taikang Space, Hive Center for Contemporary Art, Invogue Gallery (Ukraine), Beijing Contemporary Art Expo, 61e Salon de Montrouge (Paris), En Résonance avec 13e Biennale de Lyon.

From A Boy to A Man III
Installation: Wooden Door, Neon Tube, Rolled Steel

The advent of door is to distinguish two spaces that are originally connected to each other. A wooden door of a room points to a family story in which there is a relationship between family members as well as between family and society. The transformation from one story to another, in which the door appears in the process, is quite amazing.

The door is also a symbol of growth. The door is removed from its original environment, and in previous scenes it was treated as a fully functional presence. Everyone used and

observed it only in a flat dimension. In the exhibition, I present the complete door frame and door panel as a sculpture. This change in the way of viewing frees the "door" as an object from its single function.

On the front of the door panel, I enlarged a scrawled handwriting and then made a neon tube according to the handwriting trend. It recreates the memories of scribbling on the door of the house as a child. This kind of unconscious scribbling is actually a self-consistent way of a little boy’s environment.
