BALHIN

(MOVE, TRANSFER, CHANGE)

WITHOUT MOVEMENT, THERE IS NO LIFE

WITHOUT CHANGE, THERE IS NO PROGRESS.

In the Southern Philippines, when we say BALHIN, we express the movements and changes we see around us. Objects moved from one place to another or the migration of people to different countries, BALHIN embodies the inevitable movements of this world.

I see this video art installation as an allegory of my family’s past that portrays a journey which started a lineage of mix cultures. This shows a movement that transfers a woman’s thoughts and lifestyle to her new-found home and lead to changes that will reflect towards her identity. It’s a visual poetry that presents the beauty of finding new places and how our curiosity and urge to move and discover has been within us ever since we were inside our mother’s womb.

Animated using traditional stop motion techniques, visuals inspired by the traditional paper cutting, silk painting, shadow puppetry and clay culture of Changsha and exhibited in an earthy environment, this video art installation provokes our yearning of the past as we leave them behind. This exhibition is inspired by my beautiful childhood memories of listening to family stories in the woods at night.
